year 1 in Ayiti

A few years ago I was asked a question we’ve all heard before, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”  I honestly don’t remember what I said, but I know I didn’t say living in Haiti.

But on May 31st, 2018 I gave up the McDonald’s drive thru and boarded a one-way flight to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti to serve orphaned and vulnerable children.

I hear the phrase “follow your dreams” a lot these days. However, I am learning that the dreams God has for me are bigger than I had for myself.  I am also learning that my comfortable version of what I thought life was supposed to be was not God’s dream for me either.

It is different.

Not different just for the sake of being different.  A dream that is different in value and in substance not style.

This is my Haiti family and they have made the most unexpected year of my life so worth it.

A dream that is full of beautiful and hard moments. Some days living and serving in Haiti doesn’t feel like a dream. I feel like I am living in the dark. Nevertheless, this ministry, this country and these people have changed me in ways I couldn’t have ever imagined.

I am learning that it takes courage, endurance and patience to be different.

I am learning that as a follower of Christ we don’t follow a dream. We follow Christ. Then, the dream follows us and He changes the dream in our hearts.

Living and serving in Haiti is the dream Jesus had for me. It’s a dream I didn’t decide for myself and I am thankful every day for having said “yes” to Him.

I have learned to eat street food. I have learned that I can keep the rats out of my house with Irish Spring soap. I have learned to drive big trucks and I have learned to live close to the broken-hearted while at the same time see God’s light shine through His love and grace.

To know Him.  To serve Him.  To love Him.  This is the dream and nothing delights me more.

Jesus, you nailed it.

I believe with my whole heart that children need to know they are precious, unique and loved by our Heavenly Father.

Thank you for being a part of the story God is writing in my life and in the lives of the children we serve in Haiti this past year.  As a part of Back2Back’s strategy to ensure all general giving goes directly to the orphan this next year I will continue to live on a support-based salary.  If you would like to come along with me on the adventure of year 2 you can click here or send a check to Back2Back Ministries Box 70 Mason, Ohio 45040 with my name in the memo line. Please also feel free to contact me with any questions.

The fact I could not do a single thing without the partnerships of my amazing community is not lost on me. Your generosity and support mean the world to me! Thank you doesn’t seem to cover how overwhelmingly grateful I am for you!

Cheers to year 2!

Sarah – thank you for your ministry, commitment to the children and team in Haiti, and bravely answering the calling that God put in your heart. Amy and I are so proud to be a part of your team. This statement touched my heart this morning – “I am learning that as a follower of Christ, we don’t follow a dream. We follow Christ. Then, the dream follows us, and He changes the dream in our hearts.”

PS – I’ve driven with you in the United States, and I’m sure about you driving that big truck 🙂 Another thing to add to the prayer list.

Hi Sarah, thanks for the update, always love the pictures! You’ve had an amazing first year and it sounds like your heart is ready, willing and able to dive into this second year. Who knows what adventures and challenges await you, but with God at your side and with the support and prayers of your family and friends back home, I’m certain that success will continue to find you. Love you, Uncle Mick
